ZEAL
Selections adapted from Fr. John J. Nacca's †
"True Stories You'll Love and Remember"
St. Gregory the Wonder-Worker († 270), was so zealous that he converted a large number of pagans.
On his death-bed he asked, "How many people in this city are not yet Christians?"
"Seventeen," they answered.
"Thanks be to God! Exactly seventeen was the number of Christians when I came here."
All of our Lord's disciples are called to share the faith with the world. This pious man's life should serve as a reminder that our love for the Lord can move mountains and change hearts!
Jesus said - "I have come to set a fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already blazing!"(Lk. 12:49)
The Italian statesman, Camillo di Cavour, was little convinced of the good works of St. John Bosco. Not being able to close the saint's oratories and schools, which were protected by King Carl Albert, he had the saint observed and followed closely.
Every Sunday six guards accompanied and followed the zealous priest wherever he went. The priests life was so holy, and he preached so effectively on Death, Judgment, Heaven, Hell, that the guards who were at first not interested, became attentive and deeply moved. They would wipe their tears, and after the sermon, would kneel with the boys in Don Bosco's Homes of Charity, and wait for their turn to make their peace with God.
Jesus said to the Apostles - "Receive the Holy Spirit! Whose sins you forgive, they are forgiven, and whose sins you retain, they are retained." (Jn. 21:22-23)
