Art and Christian Faith

Page Two

Maybe you were one of those fortunate individuals who was given instruction in art appreciation. Some get it at school, others from a friend or book and naturally family members in the know may share tips on how to appreciate art.

If you haven't been given any training or insights in art, you might want to keep in mind the following thoughts. What was it that the artist was trying to say with his work? Does the picture recall some specific scene, from the Bible or other familiar story? What does the use of colors, light and dark tell us? What feelings do the pictures convey?

Sometimes sacred art can awaken strong emotions in us. Pictures of the Lord's Passion and death might bring on sorrow for our sins, and thanksgiving for the redeeming act of Christ's sacrifice for us. An image of Jesus with children might tell us how tender and patient our Savior is with us, just as He was with the little ones. Pictures of the Sacred Heart of Jesus can cause us to reflect how He longs to share His endless love with us, and how Christ calls us to follow His way closer and closer each day. Pictures of the Last Supper should cause us to reflect on the meaning of the Bible and the Lord's Supper
